At many startups, HR ends up doing a surprising amount of IT. Someone has to order the laptop, chase the account setup, and make sure access ends when an employee leaves. When the company grows, that work starts eating into hiring and people operations. That’s often when HR leaders start looking at managed IT support for HR teams. It’s a fair thing to want.
A good managed IT partner should take most of the technical side of the employee lifecycle off HR’s plate, starting with onboarding. In practice, HR sends over a name, a start date, and a role, maybe in a Slack message on a Tuesday. By the following Monday, the new hire’s laptop is on their doorstep, already enrolled, with email and the right apps waiting.
Offboarding is where we’d judge a partner hardest. When someone leaves, their access should be gone by the end of their last day, their laptop should come back or be wiped, and their Google Drive files should land with their manager instead of disappearing. HR should get a short record of all that. If the company is working toward SOC 2, an auditor will ask for it.
Day-to-day help is part of managed IT support for HR teams too. Employees should know exactly how to reach support and get a fast, friendly answer. When IT is slow, the complaints often land in HR’s inbox.
Communication is the part some providers get wrong. HR doesn’t need ticket numbers and acronyms. One named contact who answers in plain English is worth more than a fancy portal.
And the partner should work the way HR already works, whether that’s a link to the HR system, a shared request form, or a channel in the company’s chat tool.
